Principal Investigator

Dr. Byrne received her PhD in Psychology and Neuroscience from Boston College. Her research takes a unique comparative approach to investigating the evolutionary pressures that have led to humans’ advanced social cognitive skills, by comparing human children to non-human animals that share the same social world. She focuses on mechanisms underlying the foundational concepts of social learning, like theory of mind and imitation. The work she does is heavily interdisciplinary, as it is rooted in methods and theories from developmental, cognitive, and social psychology and is informed by evolutionary psychology and ecology.

Lab Members

Our lab provides valuable hands-on research experience for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ undergraduates and graduates studying psychology and related fields.

Annalia Pantaleon

Annalia Pantaleon is a combined-degree student pursuing a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in mental health counseling. Her passion for learning and research has led her to participate in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ dog lab. With some prior research experience, Annalia aims to expand her knowledge and skills in this field during the remainder of her time at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾. At home, she has a 3-year-old rescue pup from Puerto Rico whom she adopted when the pup was 6 months old. Her dog came with the name Mulan, after the Disney princess, which she could not resist changing because it was so fitting to her fierce independence and loyal nature.

Hailey Leticia Nieves

Hailey Leticia Nieves is a Biology, Pre-med major at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾. She has always been interested in healthcare and plans to go into med school to eventually become a surgeon. She also love animals, with her favorite being pigs. She own a Frenchie, which, she says, is close enough.

Priyanka Walavalkar

Priyanka Walavalkar (she/her) is an MS in Mental Health Counseling student and graduate assistant, serving as the primary SONA facilitator at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾. Passionate about fostering mental health awareness and evidence-based practice, she brings strong organization, empathy, and communication skills to her academic and research roles. Priyanka is an animal lover who enjoys spending time with her cat, Bubble, who keeps her company while she studies and works on research projects.
